Mainland or free zone? How to choose the right setup

14 Sep 2026·7 min read

The right jurisdiction depends on who you sell to, how you want to operate and what you want to spend.

Market access

Mainland companies can trade anywhere in the UAE and bid for government contracts. Free zone companies are limited in selling directly to the mainland unless a dual licence or distributor is used.

Cost and speed

Free zones such as RAKEZ, SPC and Ajman Freezone have very low entry costs and quick licensing. Mainland costs rise with office requirements.

Tax and compliance

Both structures are subject to Corporate Tax registration. Free zone entities may qualify for 0% on qualifying income if they meet conditions.

Key takeaways
  • Start from where your customers are
  • Compare total first-year cost, not just licence fee
  • Plan Corporate Tax early
