VAT registration in the UAE: who needs it and when

28 Sep 2026·5 min read

Registration is mandatory above a threshold, and missing it can lead to penalties. Here is how to know where you stand.

The thresholds

You must register if taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 in the previous 12 months, or you expect them to in the next 30 days. You may register voluntarily above AED 187,500.

How to register

Applications are made on the Federal Tax Authority EmaraTax portal. You will need your trade licence, passport and Emirates ID copies of owners, bank details and details of your supplies.

After registration

Charge 5% VAT on taxable supplies, issue compliant tax invoices, file returns on time and keep your records. Returns are normally filed quarterly.

Key takeaways
  • Track rolling 12-month turnover monthly
  • Register within 30 days of crossing the threshold
  • Keep tax invoices and supporting records
